Is Kratom Legal in Ohio? (2026 Law Guide) — Kratom Universe

Last reviewed: October 27, 2026. Kratom laws change quickly — confirm current rules with official state sources before buying, carrying or traveling with kratom. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Short answer: Partly. In Ohio, natural vegetative kratom — raw leaves and leaves ground into powder — is legal. But kratom extracts, tinctures, blended products and synthetic 7-OH are illegal under rules adopted by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy in 2025–2026.

What is legal and illegal in Ohio

According to the Ohio Board of Pharmacy’s consumer and retailer notice (revised October 2026):

ProductStatus in OhioEffective
Natural vegetative kratom (raw leaf, dried and crushed leaf, leaf powder)Legal—
Kratom extracts and tinctures (concentrated liquids or resins)IllegalMay 19, 2026
Kratom-derived synthetic products, including 7-OH, mitragynine pseudoindoxyl and MGM-15Illegal (Schedule I)Emergency rule Dec. 12, 2025; permanent rule May 19, 2026
Blended products (kratom mixed with other ingredients such as kava, caffeine or water)IllegalAugust 4, 2026

Natural leaf containing only trace, naturally occurring 7-OH may still be sold. Sellers must also comply with Ohio’s Pure Food and Drug Act, and the Board recommends that natural-kratom sellers contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Food Safety.

Why Ohio acted

In late 2025, Ohio declared synthetic kratom an imminent public health risk, citing more than 200 unintentional overdose deaths from 2019 to 2024 in which kratom compounds were involved. The emergency ban on synthetic products was followed by permanent rules in 2026.

Age limits and pending legislation

Ohio does not currently set a statewide minimum age for buying natural kratom. A Kratom Consumer Protection Act introduced in the Ohio House would set an age limit of 18 and formally ban synthetic 7-OH products; it had not passed as of this update.

Practical guidance

  • Plain leaf powder and capsules of leaf powder fall within the legal category; extracts, shots and mixed drinks do not.
  • If you have products in the illegal categories, the Board advises disposing of them.
